Tim Brown: The powerful link between creativity and play

Posted by Mira Bangel | 05 December 2008 | HyperThinkers | Tags: , ,

Watch this video and see Tim Brown from Ideo talk about a link between creativity and play at TED. You will get some inspiring ideas to fresh up your next brainstorm session. I personally like the ‘finger blaster’ the audience fires at the speaker but I guess that’s open for discussion.

Thanks Mira for sharing this with us. Certainly interesting learnings to put in practice.

I definitely like the play part for sure. In very old tradition, they had this play element as central point too. For instance, Chinese don’t talk about ‘practising’ tai chi but ‘playing’ tai chi. You need to play to free up your mind and let your body do the rest. Sure the same is for creativity. More you play, less restriction and inhibition you have thus you make space for creativity.

I also like the idea of more looking at what I can do with something than asking first what it is or what it is for. Even if I tend sometimes to be too adult on this :-) This is really what Web 2.0 and nowadays eMarketing is all about, isn’t? Take one or several somethings that exist and be creative with it and what you do with; play and make up complete different purposes for it!! Make sure also that you give the opportunity to others to take this even further. Sharing and openess are key in evolving and going even further.

The end is also quite interesting. Play is not anarchy but need agreed rules and the right time to do it.
